001 Luckyiam

Luckyiam is a legend.  He's been making some of the dopest hip hop out since the early 90's.  He and Sunspot Jonz formed the Mystik Journeymen in the early 90's and quickly linked up with the Grouch.  Before long, Eligh, Murs, and Scarub (3 Melancholy Gypsies) and Bicasso, and Aesop joined the crew and the Living Legends began.

The music spread like wildfire, before the internet became such an integral part of making and promoting music.  Lucky has a deep catalogue with solo records, side projects and groups with other members of Living Legends that are too many to list.  He's also a member of Machina Muerte.  Long story short, Lucky rolls with some of the most talented mc's, producers, and dj's in hip hop.

It's 2012 and Luckyiam has just released one of if not the coolest record of his career.  It's called 'Time to Get Lucky'.  It features Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Scarub, Marty James, Sleepy Will, and Lana Shea.  The first single is called 'Change This' and it's a big tune by C.M.A. (the Grouch and Luckyiam).  Make sure you take a look at that video, and go get 'Time to Get Lucky' on iTunes.

Fingers on Blast: 'Time to Get Lucky' is out, Luckydoot.com is online, and 'Change This' is in heavy rotation.  We're curious what's on deck?  Can you let us in on what we can expect from Luckyiam this summer?

Luckyiam: This summer I will be training hard in the gym getting my sexy on for my fall Leo the Lion tour with Mac Lethal! Also I have some new Prime music coming out with Sapient & a dubstep/dubHop album with Lana Shea & Kill the Computer called Luck & Lana Kill the Computer. Yeah, I said it..oh the new Prime album is called FADE & we already shot the first video. For the single A BIT DIFFERENT.
And I'm  shooting more videos for Time to Get Lucky.
I'm chillen

Fingers on Blast: The video for 'Change This' with the Grouch was filmed at Paid Dues and shows you and the Legends doing what's set you apart from the rest since day one.  The energetic live show, and being out there to meet the people who love the music.  Was there ever any thought about hooking up with a big old fashioned record label?

Luckyiam: Yeah of course the thought has been there but the horror stories of wack situations & etc. kinda made me not pursue a deal. I'd do it now tho for a side project just because I've never done that before & I'm down to try new things. And I wouldn't mind not having to oversee everything for once.

Fingers on Blast:
The Living Legends were touring worldwide prior to the internet changing the world of making music independently.  What kind of advantage does that give you in 2012 with the internet playing such a big role in music?

We have a true true true sense of DIY. AND performance experience. And we earned our fan base with grassroots hustling. They aren't just a fly by night group of fans that jumped on a wave because it was Internet popular. The advantage that gives us is longevity & credibility. We paid dues & paved the way for these other guys. But we still have to maintain a strong degree of quality and put in work to stay relevant.

Fingers on Blast: The Luckyiam catalogue goes deep, from Mystik Journeymen, Living Legends, and C.M.A. to the new solo record and beyond.  Do you have an idea how many songs you've done since the early days?  Do you have any stand out favorite songs or albums?

Luckyiam: Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiet (in doot from the Wire's voice) I have no idea how many songs I've done! Favorite songs would be Yeah- Living Legends produced by Madlib, Fly in my own right by The Prime, For You feat Aceyalone and Slug prod by Kruse albums are: Almost Famous,All Over, Classic,Black Sands ov Eternia,OverAll, Extra Credit 2, I Love Haters, One Uppers & Time to Get Lucky. Oh yea Most Likely to Succeed too.

Fingers on Blast: Searching Luckyiam on iTunes shows a ton of tracks and 5 solo albums but Extra Credit is missing.  At least in the Canadian iTunes store.  Does that have anything to do with the Layla sample?  That was one of my favorite tracks for a long time when that first came out.

Luckyiam: haaaaha...naw thas just a mistake..I'm too below the radar for Claptons people! Btw I made Layla in Canada.. Prince Albert With MILS! Bear Clan Nothern plains Cree Natives yo.

Fingers on Blast: Where did the name 'Luckyiam' come from?  I'm also curious about the PSC.  I'm just wondering what it stood for, and if dropping it had anything to do with T.I. saying Pimp Squad Click all the time.  I remember hearing that the first time, and wondering if they were talking about you, or if you and T.I. were friends.

Luckyiam: I got the name Lucky in 97 at a bboy festival we was playing with J5, Skratch Pickles & The Furious 4! Them doots was cool, they reminded me of my older uncles( Caz & Special K)..anyways bboy festivals are notorious sausage parties and somehow I pulled this lil Chinese bz so Special K was like damn you Lucky...and I was like, Luckyiam. It stuck & Im kinda known for being lucky like that. & PSC meant Pushing Suckas Consciousness or Porn Star Creator or Professional Semen Contributor or... Yeah TI's group came out and ppl was confusing us & I liked Lucky better anyways sooooo...

Fingers on Blast: 4/20 marked the last performance by all 8 members of Living Legends.  Can you shed some light on that? What prompted the decision?

Murs quit the group. Our last rehearsal before Paid Dues and right after we wrapped the Trojan Horse video shoot Murs informed us that he wasn't gonna do Legends no more. so he's a inactive lifetime member of Legends. Yeah like, that. Also..We were supposed to be on the Rock the Bells shows/tour but Grouch said he couldn't do it for personal reasons...(everybody else voted yes) so we turned down Rock the Bells, Soundset & who knows what else but all of a sudden the other day we find out from Grouch that Zion I & The Grouch & Eligh are on Rock the Bells!! I feel betrayed, So basically I'm like FUCK EVERYBODY right now because I see that doots don't give a rats ass or 2cents about my situation/best interest etc. it's MACHINA MUERTE ON MINE. TIME TO GET LUCKY. HULK SMASH. CATCH FADES, WHATEVER.

Fingers on Blast:  What have you been listening to/watching/reading lately? Anything you'd recommend?
