5 Festivals That Couldn't Happen Anywhere Else In The World:

As the spring/summertime festival season approaches, friends contest which lineup is better and which venue is cooler we have decided to make a list of a few of our favourites.  These are 5 very different festivals, all shaped by the cities where they take place.  From New York to Toronto to Detroit and way out west in Victoria and Washington state, here are 5 musical adventures you should try at least once...

T.U.R.F.: Toronto, Ontario

For two years the Toronto Urban Roots Festival has taken place at Garrison Common at Fort York.  The historical significance of the site is not lost on the audience, nor the performers and serves as a backdrop for the music in an ever changing city.  The event is run by Collective Concerts, a Toronto landmark and a company that is vital to the scene.  TURF brings cutting edge and classic acts alike, and will be taking place September 18th-20th. Rifflandia: Victoria, British Columbia

The Royal Athletic Park in Victoria on Vancouver Island hosts a multi-stage event that is the epicenter of Rifflandia.  Last year it saw headliners like Girl Talk and Death Cab For Cutie's final show with their original lineup.  What follows each night is the chance to explore the city and the world of music at the same time.  Various venues across town host shows with all sorts of music making for a very unique experience, the details of which are decided by each attendee.  This year Rifflandia takes place September 17th-20th. Sasquatch: George, Washington

The Gorge is a venue that every music lover should experience at least once.  There's no better way than to spend Memorial Day weekend camping in a community of like minded people with four days full of incredible music.  The mainstage utilizes the landscape as a natural amphitheatre and is a one of a kind, multi-level theatre.  The beauty of Sasquatch comes in its continually irreverent lineup.  This year it runs from May 22nd-25th.  More info here

Governor's Ball: New York City

Governor's Ball is a prime example of a music festival that truly reflects the identity of the city in which it's held.  The daily journey by ferry to reach Randall's Island gives each festival goer the chance to reflect on what they want to see, to prepare, and to make those last minute lineup decisions.  What you'll find each day is a lineup that is influenced and at times only possible because it's New York City.  Last year's festival saw hometown heroes like Vampire Weekend headlining, Run The Jewels performing an emotional homecoming, and Interpol debutting music from the then unreleased "El Pintor", and performing the rare festival encore.  This year Governor's Ball takes place June 5th-7th.  More info here

Movement: Detroit

Each year Hart Plaza hosts Movement, or as some call it "DEMF" (Detroit Electronic Music Festival).  Local company Paxahau delivers a lineup that balances legends in all styles of electronic music with cutting edge acts that are endlessly creative.  The audience is one that is there for the music, not so much the hype and that's fitting for the birthplace of techno.  The city comes alive around the festival and provides a warm welcome to music loving travellers from all over the world.  Each year the festival carves out space in the lineup for the incredible local talents making the "Made In Detroit" stage a must visit part of the festival.  Movement takes place on Memorial Day weekend May 23rd-25th.  More info here
